As an extraction solvent, ethanol has proven to be effective, efficient, and safe to handle. While, there is always one major problem to address with ethanol extraction beyond the safety requirements: downstream solvent handling.

As with any effective extraction solvent, pure ethanol can be quite expensive. This is why closed-loop extraction systems have become the norm for the leaders in the industry. In a closed-loop system you are able to recover a large percentage of your solvent and can reuse the solvent many times over.

To recover that volume of alcohol, the laboratory would require a large rotary evaporator or a falling film evaporator.

For years, the industry standard for solvent recovery has been the rotary evaporator, or otherwise known as the RotoVap.  A generic 20L RotoVap has a recovery rate of about 1.5 gallons per hour. For small scale setups this may suffice, but large-scale manufacturers have been forced to run multiple RotoVaps. The working capacity is only the beginning of the limitations of a rotary evaporator. Which creates a big bottleneck in your system when processing large amounts of material.

Falling film evaporation is the most efficient, effective solution to solvent recovery. One machine can potentially fulfill the capacity of up to 20 RotoVaps! Falling Film is completely automated with a control panel for quick, easy operation. Material is only exposed to heat for 30 seconds! Compare that with 1 hour for RotoVaps. According to the solvent volume, 2L, 3L, 5L’s machine is fit for lab and sample test; 5L, 10L, 20L’s machine is fit for medium experiment; 20L, 50L’s machine is fit for medium experiment and production, especially suitable for the extraction of metal ion-avoiding polluted material.

For rotary evaporator’s matching vacuum pump, we recommend water-circulating pump which can bear all sorts of solvent corrosion and can vacuumize to -0.095MPa. According to the solvent volume, we can offer various vacuum pump types.

Gum rubber is what we recommend for all vacuum tubing. Silicone or PVC tubing is what we recommend for chiller tubing. We also recommend using tubing insulation to provide the most stable temperatures possible. 

You can but you really shouldn’t. You can use an oil vacuum pump but it will quickly become ruined. Diaphragm vacuum pumps are lined with PTFE on the inside making them highly chemically resistant. If you use an oil vacuum pump with a rotovap, you will immediately notice that the pump oil will turn black and start to smell like ethanol. This is because the vapors are getting trapped in the oil case and contaminating the inside of the pump. This will dramatically decrease the lifespan of the pump and will force you to change oil very frequently. 

The Falling Film Evaporator units ship with everything required for operation; we can offer chiller or heater for the evaporator if you need.

Complete removal of solvent is hard to achieve with a single stage falling film evaporator. The amount of ethanol remaining in the concentrate is not too much.

The Falling Film Evaporator is designed to operate under vacuum, that is achieved with a low CFM water vacuum pump, it will increase the recovery efficiency and protect the concentrates.
